QMJHL Relocating to Charlottetown
« Thread started on: Jan 2nd, 2003, 09:18am » |

I have a question for all the posters from Charlottetown, in fact all of the Island. I am guessing that you have all heard the rumour that the Montreal Rocket are relocating to Charlottetown next season. Apparently the city and the Rocket have signed a 5 year deal. All is needed is league approval.
They would have allowed Montreal relocated last year if it wasn't for the Abbies having the Royal Bank Cup this year.
Anyway, my question is what do you guys think of this and will you support the QMJHL over the MJAHL?

Well, I am orginally from Charlottetown and I have been to a few Abbies games. I did enjoy them but I do have to admit when I moved to Halifax and I watched the Mooseheads play, it was almost like night and day! The players skate a lot faster, the shots are harder and the effort is stronger, in my opinion!
I know for all the other maritime teams in the "Q" they do ice a lot of players from atlantic canada. I believe that the Mooseheads haev 10 or 11 maritime players alone, one being from Charlottetown (Colby MacIntyre).
I personally think it would be really good for the city and the whole province. I have also heard that the "Q" is doing a marketing study to see if the Island can hold two teams, one is Charlottetown and one is Summerside.

Looks like the Montreal will be moving to Charlottetown and Sherbrooke moving to Lewiston, ME. The league will probably wait until the end of the season to announce. After the Abbies take a financial hit from hosting the Royal Bank Cup, the owners will be happy to let the team die. Just look at Halifax who won last year and still only draw 500 fans.

I did hear the rumour about the league going to Maine, however I believe that it will not happen next year. The rumour I continue to hear about Sherbrooke is them possibly going to Saint John. Apparently the Flames of the AHL are leaving Saint John after this season.
Who knows, however I am almost positive that the Rocket are going to Charlottetown. It was pretty well confirmed by Serge Savard Jr who is the President and GM of the Rocket.

Sounds great! I'm looking forward to another chapter of the Moncton-Charlottetown hockey rivalry. This time in the Q, with IMO the Wildcats having the upper hand next year. But we will see, I'll settle for the Beavers upsetting the Abbies this year.

Yea I would say the Wildcats will have the upper hand as they should have the best player in the "Q" next year in Steve Bernier. He should easily be a first round pick in the NHL draft next year.
Question, does anyone really think anybody has a chance against the Abbies this year? With all the rumours going around, they appear to be stocking up even more.
